Global K-pop sensation BTS swept the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMAs) on Dec. 6. The group took home a whopping eight prizes: Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Worldwide Fans’ Choice (male), Album of the Year, Best Music Video, Dance Performance (male), Best Male Group, and Worldwide Icon of the Year.
“There were times when my heart was heavy, as it felt like we were the only ones bringing good news during a year when everybody else was struggling [due to COVID-19],” said group leader RM. “I can only hope that people will sense my sincerity, clumsy as it is. To those who listen to our words of encouragement for focusing on a better tomorrow, we are truly sorry and grateful,” he added.
The 2020 MAMAs ceremony, which was broadcast with no audience present due to the pandemic, showed a pre-recorded performance of their song “ON” in addition to live performances of “Life Goes On” and “Dynamite.” One of the members, Suga, was not present due to a recent shoulder operation.
Representing the female side of K-pop, Blackpink won three MAMAs: Worldwide Fans’ Choice (female), Best Female Group, and Dance Performance (female).
