Korea’s presidential office confirmed that President Yoon Suk-yeol accepted the resignation of Hwang Sang-moo, the president’s senior secretary for civil and social agenda, on Wednesday.

The resignation comes six days after Hwang referred to a 1988 stabbing of a journalist while talking about how journalists critical of the government could face consequences during a luncheon with reporters, including some from broadcaster MBC.

The ruling party, with interim leader Han Dong-hoon at the forefront, had been rallying for Hwang’s resignation in the wake of the comments.
