South Korea reported 840 new cases of COVID-19 on Jan. 6, the second consecutive day of the daily caseload falling under 1,000.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), domestic infections numbered 809, while the remaining 31 were infections from overseas. The country’s cumulative total is now 65,818.
Among the domestic transmissions, 567 occurred in the Seoul Capital Area (SCA): 263 in Seoul, 269 in Gyeonggi Province, and 35 in Incheon. The remaining 242 occurred throughout other parts of the country. The 31 overseas infections comprised 15 South Korean nationals and 16 foreigners; six were detected during airport screening procedures, and the other 25 were confirmed while patients were in quarantine.
The number of patients in severe or critical condition increased by 25 to 411, while the cumulative death total increased by 20 to 1,027. As of Jan. 6, 17,796 patients are undergoing treatment or remain in quarantine.
