Once on the verge of extinction in Korea, the crane has made a comeback on the Korean Peninsula. Over 5,900 red-crowned cranes white-naped cranes were spotted on Feb. 9 by a birdwatcher in Cheorwon County, Gangwon Province. The sudden influx of migratory birds in the area is credited to conservation efforts and projects to preserve the birds’ habitat, including the Hantangang River and the Togyo Reservoir. The migration of cranes was the largest that South Korean has seen in over 10 years.
