During the expanded meeting of the second North Korea-US summit in Hanoi, US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un were attended by top-ranking officials. On Kim’s side were Kim Yong-chol, vice chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and director of its United Front Department and Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho. Trump was attended by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo; Mick Mulvaney, acting White House chief of staff, and White House National Security Advisor John Bolton, a notorious hardliner on North Korea. North Korea, however, in an assumed gesture of disapproval, did not provide a counterpart for Bolton, suggesting his presence resulted in extra friction during the negotiations. (Yonhap News)
