On Sept. 16, activists and civic groups gathered in Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square to call for a revision in South Korean legislation for punishing companies where workers are seriously injured or die on the job due to irresponsible or negligent management. Following the high-profile death of Kim Yong-gyun, who was only 24 when he died during an accident at Taean Power Plant in South Chungcheong Province in December 2018, an increasing number of South Koreans are becoming aware of the frequency of industrial accidents that take people’s lives.
