A statue commemorating the citizens’ militia of the May 1980 Gwangju Democratization Movement is in danger of being removed. The statue has only been up for a day. The city government hadn’t applied for approval of the statue from the company that manages the park where it stands, making it an illegal statue. The committee responsible for erecting the statue is pointing to laziness on the part of government workers, who failed to apply for a proper permit when the committee requested permission to erect the statue. The statue is of a man surnamed Kim, whose identity and remains remain a mystery. Kim was in the citizens’ militia when he was killed by airborne troops.
