A tree garden with Zelkova trees in Gangcheon Island, Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province. Since 2011 when the south Han River was affected by the Four Major Rivers Project the owner was forced to replant the 140 trees over four days in a different location by K-Water. The owner, surnamed Kang, resisted the order, saying it was, “No different from culling animals during an outbreak of disease”. According the K-Water, the replanting of the trees was legally sanctioned by the Supreme Court. When the Hankyoreh visited the site on Oct. 4, 100 out of the 140 replanted trees had died.
