Local governments neighboring the Fukushima region and activist groups throughout Japan are moving to oppose the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO)’s plan to dump radioactive water from Fukushima into the Pacific Ocean. Mitsuhiro Ishikawa, a lawmaker based in Miyagi Prefecture, called on TEPCO to stop procedures for the ocean dump, the Kyodo News reported on Aug. 25. Ishikawa argued that dumping the contaminated water into the ocean would pollute the entire region and forever brand it as a “radioactive zone.”
