The 4.16 Family Association for relatives of those who died in the April 2014 sinking of the Sewol announced that the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) will begin an investigation into the accident on Jan. 22. The Association had planned to convene a special commission of inquiry immediately after the sinking, but the Park Geun-hye government had refused to authorize funds for the investigation, labeling it as a “tax fraud.” Victor Ferrari, the MARIN researcher who is heading the project, said, “It took us eight weeks to create the model ship, and two weeks to install the internal electromechanical device. The family members then gave us the 0416 ribbon, which we attached to the model.”
